Kroppen som levende instrument

A short, neat and sweet Klang double-bill pivoting on voice and movement. In Martin Stauning’s Gestures (2020) the soprano’s ghostly song was marinated in electroacoustics, as loose as our individual ideas of a story projected onto the visual clues we were given – flowers, water, a ceremonial table and Tran in an old wedding dress.

She moved from song to sung words to spoken words. When she finally floated off, she was back on song: ‘death in life, life in death.’

In Jeppe Ernst’s 3 Romantic Songs (2017) we heard the opposite: everything tightened up. Byron’s Farewell was squeaked-out by a motionless Tran, adopting the persona of a child unaware of the shape or meaning of its words – the poet’s billowing ego deflated.

Keats’s Ode on Melancholy was straightjacketed by strict rhythms stamped-out by Tran’s feet and Shelley’s The Waning Moon was staged as an ancient ceremony, its words elevated, sanctified but anaemic. As Tran said: ‘the singer’s instrument is a living body.’ It pursued its own agendas here.

Bill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings. From Aaron Copeland and Charles Ives to Bob Dylan and Madonna. His mantra is simple: »I like when it's impossible to tell at first if something is black or white, or country or blues, or whatever«.

Born in Baltimore, Bill Frisell played clarinet throughout his childhood in Denver, Colorado. His interest in guitar began with his exposure to pop music on the radio.
