With his latest album, Polish jazz wonder Tomasz Dąbrowski creates one of the most interesting and cognitive dissonant experiences of the moment. Seeking his inspiration in both Western and East European jazz traditions, Dąbrowski delivers a fascinating mix of textures and references, but also offers the possibility of a renewal of old tropes.

If the album is presented as a tribute to his mentor, Polish jazz trumpetist and pioneer Tomasz Stańko (11 July 1942 – 29 July 2018), and if one can indeed see a homage, especially in the »Jr«, »In Transit« and »Spurs of Luck« tracks, it has also and fortunately a distinctive personality of his own.

Feeding on the obvious legacy of the 1965-1967 Coltrane and avant-garde Polish jazz, Dąbrowski also mixes improbable sounds reminding the listener of a secret sauce made associating the likes of McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, Gerry Mulligan and even Chet Baker. For instance, the tracks »Old Habits«, »Sandy« and »Troll« could be the best tribute and deconstruction of West Coast cool jazz ever.

To conclude, Tomasz Dąbrowski & The Individual Beings is an exceptionally interesting and exhilarating album, which manages to both enchant and challenge the listener in exciting ways. Very highly recommended to all those who thought the free jazz had become a rotting corpse feeding on itself.

Bill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings. From Aaron Copeland and Charles Ives to Bob Dylan and Madonna. His mantra is simple: »I like when it's impossible to tell at first if something is black or white, or country or blues, or whatever«.

Born in Baltimore, Bill Frisell played clarinet throughout his childhood in Denver, Colorado. His interest in guitar began with his exposure to pop music on the radio.
