Nikolaj Hess: »Melody«

Hybridmusik er en mærkelig størrelse. Engang hed partiturmusikkens møde med improvisationsmusikken crossover. Jazzpianisten Nikolaj Hess genopliver denne genre med sin nyeste udgivelse Melody – skrevet til violinisten Cæcilie Balling og indspillet med Danmarks Underholdningsorkester, komponisten selv og hans faste jazztrio.

De to forskellige genrer udvander tit hinanden, for hvor jazz/pop/rock ofte kræver et tight beat, gør kompositionsmusikken det netop ikke – en for mekanisk rytme kan ødelægge det hele her. Men i »Birds« og »Waves«, der indleder det halv time lange værk, lykkes det faktisk Hess ikke at falde i denne genrefælde. Trommesættet bruges som percussion eller stille baggrund med whiskers og Ballings violinstemme står stærkt og mere klar af kontrasterne. Udtrykket er svævende og stemningsskabende, men i de tre satser med betegnelsen Melody er de musikalske ideer ikke stærke nok i et symfonisk partitur. De rytmiske dele forvirrer mere end de bidrager til helheden, og det bliver for rodet og mister retning, hvor Hess lader alle musikere improvisere frit. Cæcilie Balling fanger dog noget intenst med sin violintone, særligt i den lange cadenza.

I den afsluttende »Choral« opstår der pludselig en helt anden kvalitet. Hess har gennemkomponeret en lille koralmelodi, som både er enkel men også kompleks i stemmeføringerne. I smuk, nyromantisk stil bruger han både orkestret og soloviolinen, så rørende og sårbare musikalske øjeblikke opstår. Mere af det en anden gang! Det er godt at eksperimentere og bryde genrerne op – det har vi brug for i øjeblikket. Så indspilningen bydes velkommen, om end det er en svær størrelse.

We try to hold onto an almost childlike infatuation with music, yet the art form we work in – alternative-leaning pop-rock – was created and has evolved 'in a marketplace' driven by powerful economic forces. As a romantic, that can sometimes be a bit disheartening...«

Björk takes over Polish marketplace today for secret festival finale

It was officially confirmed only recently that Icelandic avant-garde star Björk is visiting Bielsko-Biała today. After keeping it under wraps until the last moment, the organizers of the Wędrujący Festiwal (Wandering Festival) have revealed that Björk is the artist closing out the festival's grand finale.

He is the author (together with Lars Muhl) of the book HVA' SAA! En guidet rutsjebanetur gennem Aarhus – før, nu og i fremtiden (2024) and has also contributed to the anthology on music criticism Man skal høre meget (ed. Thomas Michelsen and Claus Røllum-Larsen, 2024). He is a founder and partner in the Polish-Danish cultural organization Kultur(a), and wherever there is a piano, he will be there, eager to coax a melody from it.
