Dancing is Political

MaerzMusik attempts to ask questions about time, in a sense which is broader than the merely musical. The festival aims to create debate, by bringing together artists, musicians and audiences in order to act and think together, working against marginalisation and aesthetic normativity – maybe even thereby ‘decolonising time’. Maya Shenfeld visited the festival for Seismograf, and reflects in her review upon the extent to which it lies within a music festival’s role and capacity to tackle larger social crises and inequalities, while topics such as racism, homophobia and sexism are only just beginning to be tackled within contemporary music and sound art.
